Crazy Stop Motion

I have recently become semi-interested in video production and I came across this neat video on YouTube. Enjoy!

MacHeist

For those of you who don’t know MacHeist is this cool game that is currently in progress that is all about supporting shareware software. The most recent heist scored me a copy of 1passwd.com which is a password/form management app for web browsers on the mac. It intergrates with keychain and looks pretty cool. I just installed it and will let you guys know what I think about it.

TallyHoh Upgrade

I did more work on TallyHoh tonight. I think I have pretty much gotten through the list of changes that Tyler and I came up with a few weeks ago. What I have left is:
– user contributed description
– user reviews
– feed ownership

I think I will implement reviews, but description and ownership I will suggest the feed owner update their feed directly, instead of overwriting the description on TallyHoh directly. I am not sure if there was a reason Tyler and I thought this would be a good idea, so I will have to verify that with him.

After I complete the reviews, I need to go through and clean up the code. I am sure there are plenty of places for me to make improvements, this being my first ruby application and all. After that maybe I will work with Tyler to get a blog or something put up on Protoh.com so I came put these kind of posts on there where they belong.

iTunes Radio Playlist

I was listening to MacBreak Weekly tonight and one of the hosts, Alex Lindsay, was asking if there was any way to create a radio like playlist. I wasn’t sure why he would want to do such a thing but he went on to explain how most radio stations use this type of playlist to decide what should be played next on the radio.

With the charge placed I decided to see if I could make such a playlist. I am not sure if I got it exactly correct, but I think I got it close.

Step 1: Decide the number of songs you want in your final playlist. For my example I wanted 10.
Step 2: Decide the categories. I went with Hot, Fade, and Classic.
Step 3: Create a normal playlist for each category and add the songs into those categories. My categories looked like this:

Hot:
-Apathetic Way To Be
-Fergalicious
-White & Nerdy
-My Love

Fade
-London Bridge
-SexyBack
-About Us
-Hips Don’t Lie
-Rock Star
-Snap Yo Fingers
-Too Little, Too Late
-Show Stopper

Classic
-All Relient K Albums
-All Blindside Albums
-All Skillet Albums
-All Caedmon’s Call Albums

Step 4: You will need to create wrapper smart playlists for each category playlist. Hot_filter, Fade_filter, Classic_filter. This is where half of the magic occurs. Your rules should be the following:
-Match the following rule: Playlist is xxxx, where xxxx is which ever filter you are defining.
-Limt to 1, 2, 7 items for Hot_filter, Fade_filter, and Classic_filter respectfully
-Live updating
-I set mine to selected by “random” but I would imagine if you played with this option you could get better results. For instance if you had random for classics, but least recently played for hot.

Step 5: Now you should have 6 new playlists, 3 category, and 3 filter. Now you can make your Radio_edit playlist. This should also be a smart playlist and the filters shoudl look like this:
-Maty ANY of the following rules
– then add a Playlist is xxxx rule for each filter playlist
-set no limit because the limiting is done by the filters.
-check live updating

Step 6: You should have a radio edit. I am not sure if it will do exactly what Alex was asking for but it is closer than just defining categories and randomly selecting a song from those playlists. Atleast now your odds are greater to get a song from the hot than from the fade than from the not.

Anyways, I just wanted to post that little piece of playlist fun I came up with incase any on was looking for a way to do it.

Hawaiian Shirt Day

“Good Morning [Insert Company Name Here] [Insert Location Here] Employees, today is the kickoff for Customer Service Week.”

Oh what a wonderful way to start of the week. Cookies, Donuts, and pastries. I can’t imagine any other way to start a Monday morning. Not to mention the great ceremonial ribbon cutting.

The morning was great, we had the head of HR gave a little speech, and explained what customer service week was all about, and how we can practice and acknowledge customer service. Also the unveiling of the Ambassador Board.

I realize this post is very incoherent, but I am coming done form a a sugar rush that I was on all day, from all the donuts, oh cause I didn’t mentioned we took an entire platter ( 50+ cookies) up to our office. So great.

Coding in the workplace

I have recently found myself in a bit of a burnt out state as far as coding goes. The things we are trying to do at work are inspiring, but at the same time, the technologies we are using just seem dated. I realize that most of this is just a mental hurdle. I can make any language do what I want with enough persuasion, so I try to plug forward. Tyler and I have been charged with building white label version our company’s hotel search engine. We are attempting to take an agile approach. We identified 4 main pages, so we are skipping the whole framework approach, and just charging ahead to get something out quick and dirty. In my opinion this won’t be too much of a problem, since 99.9% of the business logic shold be behind the service manager, and the UI code can be thrown out and replaced with something more powerful at a later time.

I am a little bit concerned that this might bite us in the butt, but I supported the idea, so I hope that doesn’t happen. Anyways, I made my post for the day, Have a good night.

Internet Prediction

Tonight I give you a peak into what I think the next level phase of the internet will be. But first I will re-cap where we currently are.

1. Almost everyone and there mother has access to the internet.
2. Everyone uses some sort of instant message client to conversate with friends.
3. Most people have some sort of social page, (myspace, vox, facebook).

What does this mean, it means that people are becoming comfortable with the internet, and using it to communicate with people. What is the problem with the current state of the internet? It replaces life instead of enhances it. People spend hours upon hours searching through myspace and other social websites. Why do they spend tons of time searching through these social sites? Because alot of the information does not interest them. This same phenomenon happens on the social news site digg.com. The community is huge, but this creates a problem for niche markets. I am not saying digg is flawed, on the contray it is very good at what it does. The flaw is that the community is decided, and the community is not the community I want to be apart of. So now I have the task of finding my own digg. There are other options out there like reddit.com, which I may end up switching too, if my personal attempt at the concept does not take off. However what site I choose is not important. What is important is finding the community I want to be apart of. And there in lies the next phase of the internet.

The next phase is not about masses of people using the same site, it will be about niche communities with similar interest working together to find the information and news they are interested in. This will probably extend in multiple directions. The obvious ones are areas of interest, for instance types of music, hunint enthusiasts and such. And I am not talking about a forum, but a social enginge designed to help each market enhance there outside life. Some other areas I could possibly see would be local communities. Right now geeks are the man group of people who have local user groups like orug, but I believe this will extend to the above categories. Music would be the obvious choice. A social enginge designed to help people connect with the local emo/rock/dance/pop music scene. Myspace on a smaller more local scale.

I am sure this is not the best written blog post but is where my money is on the internet.

Wii 11/19/06

First of all, WOW. For those of you who don’t know the Wii, Nintendo’s next-gen console, had a ton of announcement’s today. The two most important being the price, $250.00 US, and the date November 19, 2006. Neither one of these numbers came as too much of a suprise. I peronsally was hoping for the $200 price tag, but $250 is resonable considering it comes with a controller, nun-chuck and Wii Sports. That being said there is so much exciting news I can barely stand it. I will just highlight a few of the items I am really excited about.

Avatar’s
This seems like a really cool idea. Basically you get to define an avatar, save it on your wiimote, and take it to your friends house and use the avatar there.

Wii Sports
The simple fact that nintendo is shipping with a game at launch is really exciting. But on top of thought I heard there was Wii Boxing, and it made me very excited because of the whole two fists motion sensing between the nun-chuk and the wiimote.

25 Games at Launch
Nintendo has got there act together on this launch. Not only are they supposed to have 6,000,000 consoles on launch date, they also have 25 launch titles, not to mention the collection of historcal games at your disposal. I have to admit I haven’t gone through all the titles yet, but one did catch my eye, Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2. I have loved the Dragonball franchise since I first discovered it back on sunday mornings before I went to church with my parents. I really didn’t understand what was going on then, but later in high school I started watching again, and became obsessed with the series. Having only played two of the games in teh Budokai series I can’t claim to be an expert but everything I read about then after the first two has been very exciting. And Tenkaichi 2 looks to be no exception. On top of it being a great looking game, you can to perform the special moves with the Wiimote. How awesome would it be to have to yell out KA-ME-HA-ME-HAAAAAA to perform the classic Goku attack.

Anyways I am very exciting about all the nintendo annoucnements, and on top of that, three days in a row with new posts. I am on the ball.

Dazed and Confused

Here I am at 10:00pm ish at night and I realized I almost failed my resolution on day 1. Then I sat here for another 15 minutes trying to decide what to write. Then I remember, my day was confusing. Maybe confusing isn’t the best word to describe it, but it seems like it was extremely unproductive, but I was going at a million miles per hour. It seemed like every time I started looking into one project or bug, another bug would pop up that would take priority. I am not sure if I actually acheived anything but I kept my users happy (I think).

On top of constantly switching the proverbial gear I am “mentoring” two new developers. This could be a huge distraction of its own, but I am used to this, I was the go to guy in my last office for the new guys/gals.

Long story short I just feel bad because I feel like I am not producing as quality work for my coworkers as I am capable of. Not to mentioned, I am usually pretty drained by the end of the day so my time with Jeni is weak, and work on my side projects is lacking. Although I have made a few enhancements to TallyHoh over the past couple nights.

I think I will end this rant now, because I am probably over reacting. But for any of my co-workers that may come across this. I aplogize if I have been slacking, I will attempt to put up a better effort. And to Jeni, I apologize if I always seem out of it.

Resolution, Baby and Apple

First off, my resolution. I am going to attempt to update at least one of my blogs every day. Whether it be with a new picture on the baby blog, or a small blurb about my day on this blog. My reasoning for this is because I feel like it will help me remember the stuff I did that day so I can better interact with my wife.

The Baby part of the title refers to the fact that just before this post, I saw my baby kicking Jeni’s stomach and her stomach was actually moving. It was amazing, to see her stomach just bouncing and her not doing it.

Finally Apple, for those of you who don’t know, did a press conference today announcing alot of new upgrades. After letting the dust settle on my excitment my opinion is this. Great Job Apple, but I still need one more step. You need to seal the deal by adding HD content and I am in 100%. My great friend Tyler pointed out that I do not have an hdtv, so why would I want hd content. But it is simple, I will eventualy have HD tv, and at that point I will not want to re-purchase all the items I have bought on the iTunes Store. Like the people who bought the 320x versions of the tv shows. Also, I don’t think Apple will do this but if someone did it would make my conversion to apple a little more difficult but a download movie/tv netflix. I believe netflix is working on this, but I think if they made a deal with apple and there iTV which was announced today, I would be totally in. Pay $20 a month for unlimited movies, and the ones I want, purchase HD off the iTunes Store with the extra content (like directors cut, deleted sceneces). This would be a great setup, and I wish I had the political power to pull it off, but I think it will take Apple and/or netflix to make it work.

Anyways that is my rant for today, hopefully I will keep up with my little resolution.

P.S. I am thinking about starting a blog about the work life, not sure if it will happen but I think it will be roopsays.com (inspired by a co-worker)
